Definition :

Loudness is the characteristic property by which can distinguish two sounds of the same frequency and pitch.

We can distinguish between a faint sound from a loud sound using the property .

Factors affecting loudness

  • Loudness is directly proportional to the square of amplitude .
  • Loudness is inversely proportional to the square of distances.
  • Loudness is directly proportional to the surface of a vibrating body.
  • Loudness is directly proportional to the density of the medium.

Loudness is measured in decibels.

A sound having more than 120 dB is considered to be a noise pollutant .
