Lucas test is used for differentiate between primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols.

Explanation:

Aliphatic primary alcohol reacts with Lucas reagent(mixture of HCl and ZnCl2)

This reaction is fast and produce alkyl halides with Imidiate turbidity.

Secondary alcohols reacts slower than primary and produce turbidity in 5-10 minutes

tertiary alcohols do not produce turbidity in normal room temperature but when heated indicates slow formation of alkyl halides.
