Magnetic materials exist in nature or they can be made. These materials attract objects made of metals, like iron etc. You may have seen bar magnets some time. Each magnet has two ends and they are called north pole and south pole. The magnets have a property - like poles repel and unlike poles attract.
Likewise, moving electric charges and electric current also are observed to have a magnetic effect.
Around magnet or an electric current there is a region in which they exert some influence of Force on magnetic materials. This space is said to be having a magnetic field. The magnetic field is a vector. It's magnitude and direction are given by the Force experienced by a unit magnetic pole stregnth. Its direction is the same as that of the force experienced.
Magnetic field is also defined by the torque experienced by a magnetic dipole of unit dipole moment when the dipole is perpendicular to the field direction.
Magnetic field direction can be obtained by spraying iron filets (very light powder) around. These filings align themselves along lines (closed loops). Tangent to a line at any point gives the direction of the magnetic field at that point.
