Atmosphere:-
A blanket of gases surrounding the earth is known as Atmosphere.
Composition:-
Earth's atmosphere is composed of:
- 78% nitrogen
- 21% oxygen
- 1% other gases.
Based on temperature, the atmosphere is divided into layers:-
Troposphere:
- This is lowest layer of the atmosphere.
- We can see clouds.
Stratosphere:
- This layer contains ozone which absorbs the Sun's ultraviolet rays, protecting life on the earth's surface.
Mesosphere:
- Reaches about 80km above the surface of the earth.
- This is the coldest layer of the atmosphere as the temperature decreases rapidly with increase of altitude.
Thermosphere:
- It extends to 80-100 kilometres above the earth's surface.
- Presence of very little air.
Exosphere:
- It is the very outer limit of the atmosphere.
- The bottom of this layer is found at 500 kilometres above the Earth's surface
Importance of atmosphere:-
- Protects life from harmful radiation from the Sun.
- Keeps the climate on Earth moderate compared to that of other planets.
- It serves as a medium for movement of water.
