Atmosphere:-

A blanket of gases surrounding the earth is known as Atmosphere.

Composition:-

Earth's atmosphere is composed of:

  •  78% nitrogen
  • 21% oxygen
  • 1%  other gases.

Based on temperature, the atmosphere is divided into layers:-

Troposphere:

  • This is lowest layer of the atmosphere.
  • We can see clouds.

Stratosphere:

  • This layer contains  ozone which absorbs the Sun's ultraviolet rays, protecting life on the earth's surface.

Mesosphere:

  • Reaches about 80km above the surface of the earth.
  • This is the coldest layer of the atmosphere as the temperature decreases rapidly with increase of altitude.

Thermosphere:

  • It extends to  80-100 kilometres above the earth's surface.
  • Presence of very little air.

Exosphere:

  • It is the  very outer limit of the atmosphere.
  • The bottom of this layer is found at 500 kilometres above the Earth's surface

Importance of atmosphere:-

  • Protects life from harmful radiation from the Sun.
  • Keeps the climate on Earth moderate compared to that of other planets.
  • It serves as a medium for movement of water.
