Any kind of enviromental phenomenon that is hazardous and unexpected is called disaster.

Disaster can be of two types - Manmade and Natural.

Manmade disasters are those which are done by men intentionally or unintentionally.

Natural disasters are those which are not done by anyone and is caused naturally.

Disasters are not usually useful but, natural disaster like flooding, volcano eruption may be beneficial after some period of time.

Flooding increases soil moisture content and volcano eruption makes the soil nutritious.

Harmful effects of disaster are mainly faced initially and those could vary from bad to worse. Like flooding causes death of people , loss of homes etc.

Volcano eruption might have a bad impact on fresh air and also might threaten the nearby species.
