Defining dual polity. The Constitution establishes a dual polity consisting the Union at the Centre and the States at the periphery. Each is endowed with sovereign powers to be exercised in the field assigned to them respectively by the Constitution.

Similar to the governance model of the United States, India follows what is known as a 'Dual Polity' System or a 'double government system' where the constitution clearly defines the law, powers, limitations of the Central or Federal Government based in Delhi and the State Government based in the regional capitals.

This system gives considerable power to local states to form their own laws, rules and regulations which they can conform to and are comfortable with. For example, while the language primarily spoken in Delhi is Hindi and Punjabi, States in the South such as Tamil Nadu have their own language and follow their own education system
