Supposedly, you live in a city. You go to a school which asks you to write about rural life style and practices.

As you live in the city, you may not be familiar. So you go to a place to study or observe them in close proximity. That could be a field visit.

Any visit which would help you increase your knowledge about anything or lets you obtain information could be termed a field visit.
