Kabirlarai’ were poetry contests. These are a form of entertainment in Bengal. These were usually patronized and encouraged by the merchant elite of Kolkata.Besides entertaining common people, these contests encouraged poets to display their talents in extempore poetry composition.

in bengali language ,kabi means poet and larai means contest.thus,the word kabir karai means contest of the poets or poetry contest.these were a popular form of entertainment .these were usually patronised and encouragement by the rich people of calcutta for entertainment .in kabirlari two person who were lyricist and composer at the same time , answers each other in form of songs.it was referred as as kavigan.
