Xylem is a complex permanent tissue composed of a thick-walled and dead cells.
- Xylem is also called water conducting tissue.
Xylem tissue consists of four different type of cells-
Xylem tissue is mainly concerned with the conduction of water and minerals from root to different plant parts.
It provides mechanical support to the plant.
Phloem is the living conducting tissue. it contains tubes for the transport of food products from green and storage organs of the plant to other organs.
- Phloem is also called the bast.
It consists of five types of of cells or elements
Phloem tissue helps in conduction of food from leaves to storage organs.
- Contains many dead element except xylem parenchyma.
- Two types of conducting elements, tracheids and vessels are found.
- It helps in conduction of water and inorganic solutes.
- It also provides mechanical strength to the plant.
- It contains many living cells except phloem fibres.
- Only one type of conducting element, namely sieve tubes are present.
- It helps in conduction of food or organic solute.
- Only phloem fibres provide mechanical strength to the plant body.
