I believe the keyword is elegance. There are many other factors to good game design, though when it come to ‘simple but deep’, elegance is the key.

When it comes to game design, elegance means overloading each element in your game. That is, you let a game element perform multiple duty.

Take for example, Pac Man. Despite it looks like a simple game, there is some depth to its mechanics, because of the dot you eat as you navigate the maze.

The dots give you points, allowing you to track your accomplishment….and with enough points, you gain a life.You need to eat all the dots to progress to the next level, so it gates your progress and gives you a long term goalIt provides you with a short term goal — ‘eat all the dots close to me’When you are eating dots, you are slower, meaning you are more vulnerable to be chased down by the ghosts. They create an element of risk and reward.
