The Doctrine of Lapse was a policy by which, of a ruler of an independent (princely) State of India died without a natural heir (successor), the State will pass to the British Company. For example, Satara, Jhansi and Nagpur was annexed by this policy.
Rani Laxmibai had an adopted son Anand Rao. Since he was her adopted son, he did not get pension when Rani Laxmibai lost her throne.
