One of the largest movements related to dairy in India in 1970, where farmers were encouraged to keep more cows and nurture milk production, thereby increasing milk production is termed as White Revolution. .
Verghese Kurien the founder of one of India’s largest dairy Companies –
Amul was the pioneer of the White Revolution. He along with his friend H. M.
Dalaya invented the technology to produce powder milk and revolutionise the process of milk production in India.
India’s National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) was established thereafter to assist the initiative.
Increase in milk production was not the only benefit India derived from White
Revolution, the country also began exporting milk powder, generated employment for almost 10 million dairy farmers, revolutionized the technology of milk production, encouraged cross breeding which led to genetic improvement in animals, and put a stop to milk import.
