hi there✋✋✋✋

Ozone depletion is a major environmental problem because it increases the amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that reaches Earth's surface, which increases the rate of skin cancer, eye cataracts, and genetic and immune system damage.

Ozone depletion occurs when chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons—gases formerly found in aerosol spray cans and refrigerants—are released into the atmosphere CFCs and halonscause chemical reactions that break down ozone molecules, reducing Ozone's ultraviolet radiation-absorbing capacity.

Ozone (O3) is a form of oxygen and is more stable than the two-atom oxygen (O2). O3 is a tri-atomic molecule of oxygen. The ozone layer is found in the atmosphere at a height of about 15 to 30 km from the surface of the Earth.

Ozone is a poisonous gas that has harmful effects on the respiratory system of animals. However, this gas protects us from the harmful ultraviolet radiations of sun. The ozone layer protects and prevents these ultraviolet radiations from reaching the Earth’s surface.

This useful ozone layer is getting depleted as a result of pollution.

Causes of Ozone Layer Depletion

The primary reason behind the reduction of the ozone layer is the use of Hydro- Chloro-fluoro-carbons (HCFCs) and chloro-fluoro-carbons ( CFCs).  They are compounds of chlorine, fluorine, and carbon such as CF3Cl, CHCl2F etc. These are used as refrigerants in refrigerators, air conditioners, and in cooling plants. These molecules can destroy O3 molecules and therefore depletion of the O3 layer.

Nitrogen oxides such as nitrous oxide are also very reactive to O3 and are also responsible for holes in the ozone layer. These molecules are released by burning fossil fuels by cars and especially airplanes which fly near the ozone layer.

Since 1975, the hole has increased in size due to depletion in the ozone layer. Reductions of up to 70% have been found in some areas.
