pH is hydrogen ion concentration in a solution,a indicator which indicates acid and base due to colour change.
Acid rain is there when the pH of rain is less than 5.6.
When acid rain flows into rivers it lowers the pH of river water.The survival of aquatic life in such river becomes difficult.

The hydrogen ion  concentration of a solution is called its pH.
Non-metallic gaseous pollutants like SO₃,SO₂, NO₂,CO₂ are present in the atmosphere due to pollution from factories, cars etc. When rain water falls, its reacts with these gases to form acidic hydroxides and this type of rain having pH<7 is called acid rain.
eg. CO₂ (in air) + H₂O (water droplet) = H₂CO₃ (acidic)
SO₂(in air) + H₂O(water droplet) =  H₂SO₄ (acidic with high pH)
Effects=>
1)Causes yellowing of marble as marble reacts with sulphur in H₂SO₄.
2)Causes damage to metals and monuments.
3)Pollutes & lowers ph of water of lakes, rivers in and causes the aquatic organisms to die.
4)Can cause skin burn.
