Picottah or Pecottah is a contrivance used to raise water for irrigational purposes and consists of a long lever or yard, pivoted on an uprights post, weighted on the short arm, and bearing a bucket suspended by a bamboo from the long arm. The Picottah has also been described as the trunk of a tree, resting near the middle of the fork of another tree on which men run up and down to raise a large bucket of water. Picottah stems from the Portuguese word Picota, and is also applies to the lever of a ship’s pump and post in which it works.
