PIL stands for public interest litigation. It can be filed in any High court or Supreme Court by an ordinary person when his basic fundamental rights are violated by anyone. The court may issue writs to to ensure that the person gets his right.
Hope it helps :)

PIL means Public Interest Litigation . The Supreme Court devised PIL to increase access to justice . It allowed any individual or organisation to file PIL in high court or the supreme court on behalf of those whose rights have been violated . The legal process was greatly simplified and even a letter addressed to the supreme court or the high court could be treated as PIL . PIL was also used to secure justice on a large number of issues . The mid day meal that is recieved to children in government schools is because of PIL .
