PLACENTA:

The growing foetus is attached to the uterus by a structure called Placenta. Present as an association between the uterine wall of the mother and the extraembryonic membranes of the embryo.

A cord containing blood vessels connects the placenta with the foetus this is known as umbilical cord.

FUNCTIONS:

  • by diffusion, foetal blood of receives oxygen and food from the mother's blood.
  • Placenta produces two hormones progesterone and oestrogen. These hormones prevent ovulation and menstruation during the entire period of pregnancy.
  • Placenta allow the passage of nutrients and antibodies.
