Plaster of paris is a soft mixture of sand and cement and sometimes lime with water, for spreading on walls, ceilings, or other structures, to form a smooth hard surface when dried.

It is perpared by heating gypsum at 100° C.

It is commonly used to precast and hold parts of ornamental plasterwork placed on ceilings and cornices. It is also used in medicine to make plaster casts to immobilize broken bones while they heal, though many modern orthopedic casts are made of fibreglass or thermoplastics.

Plaster of Paris :
On heating gypsum at 373 K , it loses water molecules and becomes calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CaSO4.1/2 H2O)
this is called plaster of Paris , the substance which doctors use as plaster for supporting fractured bones in right position.
