A preposition is a part of speech which is placed before a noun or a pronoun to connect it with other word in a sentence. It shows place, position, time and method. A preposition comes at the beginning of a phrase telling us - when, where, why, how.

The noun or pronoun coming after the preposition is called the prepositional object.

Like sentences, preposition can be simple, compound and even complex.

For example :

(A) at, after, by, on, in, under, up, with, over, to, etc., are all simple prepositions.

(B) according to, because of, due to, owing to, by dint of, in front of, etc., are complex prepositions.

(C) across, along, around, before, below, between, inside, etc., are compound prepositions.

Now, in some places, omission of perpositions can be seen :

(A) I will see you Sunday.

(B) I came here yesterday

(C) Did you attend the meeting last sunday?

These are the original or basic details regarding "PREPOSITIONS". Can you fill in the following sentences with suitable prepositions? I think you can. Have a try.

[1] She sat __ the chair.

[2] I know her __ name.

[3] This is made __ hand.

[4] He died __ injury.

[5] He is firm __ his opinion.

[6] This is a chain __ gold.

[7] He is very different __ her.

[8] Sri Lanka is __ the south of India.

[9] The story is based __ ghosts.

[10] Speak __ english.

Answer:

Prepositions and postpositions, together called adpositions, are a class of words used to express spatial or temporal relations or mark various semantic roles. A preposition or postposition typically combines with a noun phrase, this being called its complement, or sometimes object. So, A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. Some examples of prepositions are words like "in," "at," "on," "of," and "to.
