Refraction can be defined as the change in direction of wave as it goes from one transmission medium to other.
Example :
When you look at a straw dipped in a glass of water, the part in the air and the part in water look like they are not the same straw. It looks distorted.
Explanation :
This is due to refraction. Here the transmission medium for light changed from air to water and therefore the light ray gets refracted and the straw looks distorted.
