Enzymes actually speed up the reactions they catalyze. The regulation of enzymatic activities help to maintain the balance. Enzyme activity is regulated by other molecules which can either increase or decrease their activity. Those molecules which increase the enzymatic activity are called the activators while those molecules which decrease the enzymatic activity are the inhibitors which can be competitive or non competitive.

Regulation of enzyme activity

Enzymes are a vital part of body reactions. Therefore it is necessary to regulate them properly. There are four major types of enzyme regulation methods.

• Genetic Regulation :

This type of regulation involves body cells which target specific enzyme and either decrease its production that is called "repression" or increase enzyme production called "induction".

• Compartnentalization :

The second type of regulation involves membrane bounded compartments in the cell which have specific enzymes and the enzymes are allowed to stay inside and function only function inside the membrane bounded organelle. Example of this is lysosome.

• Substrate Concentration :

Another procedure of enzyme regulation is by controlling the substrate concentration and indirectly the enzyme activity.

• Degradation :

In this way the enzyme degradation occurs and indirectly enzyme regulation occurs.
