Relationship between Hardware and Software
Mutually dependent. Both of them must work together to make computer produce a useful output.
Software cannot be utilized without supporting hardware.
Hardware without set of programs to operate upon cannot be utilized and is useless.
To get a particular job done on the computer, relevant software should be loaded into the hardware
Hardware is a onetime expense.
Software development is very expensive and is a continuing expense.
Different software can be loaded on hardware to run different jobs.
Software acts as an interface between the user and the hardware.
If hardware is the 'heart' of a computer system, then software is its 'soul'. Both are complimentary to each other.

CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION

1.1

DEFINITION OF SOFTWARESoftware is the collection of computer programs, procedures and documentation thatperforms different tasks on a computer system. The term 'software' was first used by JohnTurkey in 1958. At the very basic level, computer software consists of a machine language thatconsists of groups of binary values, which specify processor instructions. The processor instructions change the state of computer hardware in a predefined sequence.1.2

DEFINITION OF HARDWAREThis are electronic devices that can follow instructions to accept input, process thatinput, and produce informationand also aphysical devicesomething that you're able to touchand see. For example, the computer monitor you're viewing thistexton or themouseyou'reusing to navigate is considered computer hardware.

CHAPTER TWOCLASSES OF SOFTWARE

There are two major classes of software ---system software and application software, youcan think of application software as kind you use and think of system software as the kind thecomputer uses.2.1 System softwareHandles technical details, operating systems, utilities, device drivers, and language translatorsare types of system software programs2.1.1 Operating systems coordinate computer resources, provide an interface between users andthe computer, and run application and also a collection of programs that handle many of thetechnical details related to using a computer in many ways, an operating system is the mostimportant types of computer program without it your computer would be useless.

Every computer has an operating system and every operating system performs a varietyof functions. These functions can be classified into three groups:

anaging resources: These programs coordinate all the computer¶s resources includingmemory, processing, storage and devices such as printers and monitors, they also monitor system performance, schedule jobs, provide security, and start up the computer.Graphical user interface provides graphical elements such as icons and windows
P
roviding user interface: User interact with application programs and computer hardwarethrough a user interface.
