When two or more organic compounds have same molecular formula but they differ in their structure due to one being cycling compound and another being open chain compound, then they are called ring chain isomer and the phenomenon is called ring chain isomerism.

Compounds having the same molecular formula but possessing open chain and cyclic structures are called ring chain isomers and the phenomenon is called ring-chain isomerism.

For example propene and cyclopropane are ring chain isomers.
