A saprophyte or saprotroph is an organism which gets its energy from dead organic matter. This may be decaying pieces of plants or animals. This means that saprophytes are heterotrophs. They are consumers in the food chain.

Saprotrophs are plants which derive its nutrients from dead and decaying organisms. They are usually whitish but they may have colourful flowers. Their roots contain fungi which converts the dead and decaying matter into nutrients which can be used as food. Indian Pipe is an example for Saprotrophs.
