प्रत्येक व्यक्ति के तीन गुण होते हैं। सतो गुण, रजो गुण और तमो गुण। सतो गुण सबसे श्रेष्ठ गुण होता है। उच्च विचार, संयम, सभ्य और अच्छा व्यवहार इसके लक्षण हैं। सतो गुण से सकारात्मक सोच होती है जो मन में उजाला होने के समान है। रजो गुण से प्रेरित प्राणी अधिक क्रियाशील होता है। तमो गुण के प्रभाव से व्यक्ति आलसी, निराशावादी और निष्क्रिय हो जाता है। तमो गुण से नकारात्मक सोच होती है जिसे मन के अँधेरे के समान समझा जा सकता है।
