Any quantity which can onlyhave aspecificmagnitude in one dimensionis ascalar.

For example, time, mass anddistance are scalars. This means that these quantities do not require specification of direction as concerns the currently accepted physical model. Simply put, you can't have “negative time", “negative mass” or “negative distance" as practically measured and accepted quantities.


In contrast to these quantities, consider force.When you apply a brake on a moving vehicle, you decelerate it. Hence, the braking force is a force applied in the negative direction with respect to the moving vehicle. This implies that force can have a positive and a negative direction and is, thus,nota scalar. Force, in fact, can be exerted in any possible direction and such quantities are called vectors
