An atomic orbital is defined as the three dimensional space around the nucleus within which the probability of fnding an electron of given energy is maximum.
In multi electron atoms, the electrons in the valence shell experience an attractive force from the nucleus and a repulsive force from the electrons of inner shells. The repulsive force felt by the valence shell electrons from the electrons present in inner orbitals is called screening effect or shielding effect. This is because due to these electrons the net attractive forces experienced by the valence electrons decreases. Thus we can say that in multielectron atoms, the inner electrons shield or screen the outer elctrons from the attractive force of nucleus.

From the knowledge of radial probability distribution graphs, we know that 2s electrons are more penetrating
( having more probability of being find near the nucleus ) than 2p orbitals. In general the penetration power of electrons in different orbitals is in the order of :
s>p>d>f ...... order of penetration
Due to greater penetration, s-electrons have maximum screening effect. For a given energy level, the screening effect of electrons in various orbitals varies in the order

s>p>d>f ...... order of screening effect
