Shadow is an image formed by obstruction of light. You can see your shadow in day time or lighted room. 

When a body blocks the light partially or completely from falling it on a surface, shadow is observed. For example if there is no light in the room you find it black, similarly the absence of light on the surface makes it appear to be black and thus the shadow is observed in the shape of the body blocking the light from reaching the surface
