In physics, a sign convention is a choice of the physical significance of signs(plus or minus) for a set of quantities, in a case where the choice of sign is arbitrary. "Arbitrary" here means that the same physical system can be correctly described using different choices for the signs, as long as one set of definitions is used consistently

Hey there!

sign convention is the use of '+' or '-' sign to differentiate between two direction.for example if direction left to right is considered '+' then the direction right to left will have a '-' sign.

you can see the use of sign convention in case of mirror and lens questions.above and below principle axis the sign are different. similarly to the left and right of the pole they have different signs.
