Hey there!

Sonata form, also called Sonata-Allegro form, is a particular way of structuring a piece of music.
It's Functions are:

♦ Multiple musical statements, or themes, of contrasting character are presented one after the other, in a relatively “square” and stable fashion. EXPOSITION SECTION.

♦ These statements are then deconstructed, with certain elements from each intermingled with one another in music of a more agitated, unstable character, usually marked by a contrapuntal style of writing and by rapid changes of key, also called DEVELOPMENT SECTION.

♦ Then finally, there is a return to stability in which the original statements are once again presented, perhaps with slight differences. Where the themes are altered, the changes usually reflect in some sense the transformation experienced in their development, also called RECAPITULATION SECTION.

Sonata form, also known as sonata-allegro form, is an organizational structure based on contrasting musical ideas. It consists of three main sections - exposition, development, and recapitulation - and sometimes includes an optional coda at the end. In the exposition, the main melodic ideas, or themes, are introduced.

A sonata is a long piece of classical music that's usually made up of several parts. A sonata can be played by an orchestra or just one instrument, like a piano. If you're a classical music fan, you've probably heard sonatas played in concert halls or on recordings.

An allegro, which by this point was in what is called sonata form, complete with exposition, development, and recapitulation. A slow movement, an Andante, an Adagio or a Largo. A dance movement, frequently Minuet and trio or—especially later in the classical period—a Scherzo and trio.
sonata form, also called first-movement form or sonata-allegro form, musical structure that is most strongly associated with the first movement of various Western instrumental genres, notably, sonatas, symphonies, and string quartets. Maturing in the second half of the 18th century, it provided the instrumental vehicle for much of the most profound musical thought until about the middle of the 19th century, and it continued to figure prominently in the methods of many later composers.Although sonata form is sometimes called first-movement form, the first movements of multimovement works are not always in sonata form, nor does the form occur only in first movements. Likewise, the variant sonata-allegro form is misleading, for it need not be in a quick tempo such as allegro.
