The subject in the sentence (usually it is a noun) and the verb have to be the same in terms of gender and in number. In English gender usually doesn't effect the verb.
So both the subject and the verb together have to be plural or singular.
Usually in the past and future tenses the form of verb is the same for plural or singular subjects. Thus the agreement between the subject and the verb applies mainly to the present tense and its subtenses.
Some examples are:
He is running. They are running.
He has to write. She has to write. I have to write.
He has given them a lesson.
His handwriting is good. Their handwriting is good.
Their writings are good.
