\huge\mathtt{\underline{Taxon}}

A taxon is a level of hierarchy in the system of classify organisms.

Following are the hierarchical levels .

  • Kingdom
  • Phylum
  • Class
  • Order
  • Family
  • Genus
  • Species

\huge\mathtt{\underline{Class}}

It is a taxonomical hierarchy higher than order and lower than phylum. Class includes related to orders of the organisms.

Ex:- Presence of notochord in mammals.

\huge\mathtt{\underline{Phylum}}

It is a taxonomical hierarchy below Kingdom and above class. It is a taxon with one or more classes organisms with similar characteristics.

\huge\mathtt{\underline{Family}}

It has a group of related genera with still less number of similarities as compared to genus and species.

Ex:- Fox and dog belongs to the same family. It is a group of entities below order and above genus.

\huge\mathtt{\underline{Order}}

It is a tax on below higher than family and lower than class. Order being a higher category is the assemblable of families which exhibit a few similar characters.

\huge\mathtt{\underline{Genus}}

It comprises a group of related species which has more characters in common in comparison to spaces of other genera.

Ex:- Lion, tiger and leopard are classified under genus Panthera. It is above species and below family.

✒Have you ever heard the term, Hierachy? Hierarchy means grouping of things rank over one another.

✒Classification is not a single step but it involves classifying the organisms in separate rank and category. This kind of category and arrangement is known as taxonomic category and taxonomic hierarchy respectively.

❇ And the unit of classification or rank is known as taxon.

 \LARGE{ \boxed{ \bold{ \red{Exa} \green{mpl} \red{es....}}}}

✒The organisms are classified into different groups at different barriers hierarchical levels on the basis of characteristics.

✒The largest unit of classification is kingdom. Kingdom is divided into Phylum or divisions for plants. Division is composed of classes with subdivided into order. Order into families, families into genera and genera finally into species. There are more subunits that is subspecies in animals and varieties in plants.

❇ Here, is an example of classifying and then naming Tiger, Panthera tigris.

 \large{ \rm{ \red{Kingdom} - Animalia}} \\   \large{ \rm{ \red \:  \downarrow}} \\  \large{ \rm{ \red{Phylum \: or \: Divisons} - Chordata}} \\  \large{ \rm{ \red \:  \downarrow}} \\  \large{ \rm{ \red{Class} - Mammalia}} \\  \large{ \rm{ \red \:  \downarrow}} \\   \large{ \rm{ \red{Order} - Carnivora}} \\  \large{ \rm{ \red \:  \downarrow}} \\  \large{ \rm{ \red{Family} - Felidae}} \\  \large{ \rm{ \red \: \downarrow}} \\  \large{ \rm{ \red{Genus} - Panthera}} \\  \large{ \rm{ \red \:  \downarrow}}  \\  \large{ \rm{ \red{Species} - tigris}}

✒ When we rise from downward to upward, the similarities between the characteristics of organisms, decreases. For example: Animals of same species are more likely to show similar characteristics than animals of same genus.

Taxonomy is the branch of biology which deals with naming or organisms(nomenclature) and putting them in groups or categories or taxons(classification). Carl Bon Linneaus is known as the father of taxonomy.
