The tooth is a hard, highly generalized organ implanted in the palate of the rays, the gum of the sharks or the bones of the upper and lower jaws of other vertebrates, whose main functions are to seize, retain, tear and grind food, but Also defense against predators or rivals.

The teeth are often characterized by the diet of the species which determines their shape, their number, their implantation or their durability. For example, felines have highly developed carnivorous teeth in order to shred their prey, while the teeth of humans are adapted to their omnivorous diet. Teeth are found in three classes of vertebrates: fish, reptiles and mammals, but some groups in these classes are not provided, while others have their teeth renewed throughout their lives.
