There are main functions of language
Languages are divided into two types, Verbal and Non-Verbal.

Verbal Language contains the spoken languages we have today.

Non-Verbal Language contains the Body Language(Sign Languages are part of Body Languages).

As you can see, Languages are the only way humans can communicate with each other and the Nature. Hence Language is a Necessity of Humans!

If you by any chance think ‘what about Animals and Plants? They dont have a language!’, the answer is simply ‘they actually do communicate, but Humans are incapable of understanding them because of limited Linguistic frequency we have. i.e. Our hearing range is limited between 20–20,000 Hz, we can’t hear ants walking/intercommunicating because their sound frequency is Infrasonic, and we can’t hear Bats communicating with the Nature(for Flight Navigation) because their sound frequency is Ultrasonic.’
So two great work of language are
1.communicate with each other
2 officially correspondance
3 understanding the signals for pre alert

I hope this answers your question!
