Imbibition is a type of diffusion when water gets absorbed by Solids that causes an enormous increase in Volume.

Hope it will help to you.....

→ It is a type of diffusion in which water is absorbed by solids causing them to increase in volume.

E.g. absorption of water by seeds and dry wood.

→ The pressure due to the swelling of wood can split rocks.

→ Seedlings are emerged out of the soil due to the imbibition pressure.

Imbibition requires the following:-

o Difference in concentration gradient.

o Basically we can see the water potential gradient between the absorbent and the liquid imbibed.

o And we can find the affinity between the adsorbent and the liquid.
