Bacilli are rod shaped gram positive disease causing aerobic bacteria. The singular form of bacilli is bacillus and was termed by Christian Gottfried Ehenberg in 1835. They often occur as chains and produce endospores, as well as secrete enzymes in large quantities. Most bacilli are either some form of parasites or saprophytes. While some bacilli can cause food to get spoilt and/or some diseases, there are some good bacilli that are used to make antibiotics, help in colonization of human intestinal tract and assist in digestion.
