A virus is a very small microorganism that cannot be seen with the naked eye or by light microscopy. The typical size of a virus is 20 nm to 300 nm. Viruses multiply inside the living cells of the host in which they reside. These hosts primarily comprise animals, plants and bacteria. A virus is surrounded by a protein coat and a DNA or a RNA core as its genetic material.

In computer terminology, a virus is used to refer to a piece of code that has an adverse effect on the system by destroying the data in the system or corrupting the system. Here, virus stands for Vital Information Resource Under Siege.
