An epidemic refers to the outbreak of a disease that
spreads at a very fast rate and affects a lot of people in a specific
population at the same time in a very short span of time. This time period is
generally a maximum of two weeks. The word epidemic is derived from two words epi and demos that mean upon or above and people respectively. The result
of an epidemic is usually disastrous. When the epidemic spreads to a location
other than the place it originated in, it is called a pandemic.
