What is the definition of Protozoa?

Protozoa refers to an organism with a single cell. Some of these organisms are parasites while others reside in water. Although there are many protozoans, the most common one are amoebae. They move about using appendages and are known for their independent movement. Based on their movement, these organisms are classified into different groups called phyla or classes.


There are primarily four phyla as given below with examples:


Mastigophora – Euglena, Chlamydomonas


Apicomplexa – Plasmodium found in red blood cells


Sarcodina – Amoeba, Arcella


Ciliophora – Paramecium, Vorticella
