Isolation refers to the process of keeping someone or something away from other people or other things. People are often kept isolated when they suffer from an infectious or contagious disease. This is usually referred to as quarantine. Isolation also indicates the state of being without any form of help or friends. In other words, an isolated person always feels alone or being left out.

Examples of isolation are keeping a prisoner in solitary confinement and getting stranded during a hazardous expedition.
