What is the difference between a monocot and dicot?

Monocot -

  • The monocot embryos have a single cotyledon.
  • They have a fibrous root system
  • Leaves in monocot have parallel venation
  • In monocot flowers,the count of parts of the flower is a multiple of 3 or equal to 3.

Dicot -

  • The dycot embryos have a pair of cotyledons
  • They have a tap root system
  • Leabes in dicot have reticulate venation
  • The count of parts in a dicot flower is a multiple of four or five or equal to four or five

  • vascular bundles are arranged in a ring (in roots)
  • Vascular bundles are scattered throughout (in steam)
  • their leave veins are usually parallel
  • floral parts are multiple of three
  • Example= grass,corn, wheat , palm, bamboo etc.

Dicot

  • It contains two cotyledons
  • one large taproot with little hairs off it
  • vascular bundles are arranged in star Shape ( in roots)
  • Vascular bundles are arranged in rings ( in steam)
  • leaves are of like vein are usually net-like
  • Multiples of four or five floral parts
  • Example= Rose, violet , sunflower, water lily etc.
