OVERLAPPING DIFFERENCES:

1. When some social difference overlaps other difference it is called overlapping social difference.

2. Overlapping differences is the mixture of one or more differences caused by one main difference. They also become difficult to accommodate.

3. Overlapping differences create possibilities of deep social divisions and tensions.

CROSS-CUTTING DIFFERENCES:

1.If social differences cross-cut one another,it is difficult to pit one group of people against other.

2. It means that a group that share a common interest on one issue are likely to be on different sides on a different issue.

3.  Cross-cut social differences are easier to accommodate.

¤Overlapping Differences.

•If social differences overlap with each other, it may lead to social division and if one social difference is given preference ,then people would began to think that they belong to different community.

•Example -:
USA : The black are discriminated against by the Whites due to their poverty( racial discrimination ) .
India : Dalits are discriminated against as they are landless and poor.

•It leads to social division and disintegration of the country.

¤Cross Cutting Differences.
•If social differences cross cut each other we would find it difficult to find which group is against the other. These groups may have similar views on some issues and different views on other issues.

•Example -:
The Netherlands : The main religion here is Christianity. Christians are divided as the Catholics and the protestants. Here, class and religion cross -cut each other. Neither religious community is richer or poore. So, there is no conflict between them.

•It encourages diversity and accommodates unity.

Hope this will help you ...
