A signature can be anything. It doesn't have to be legible (It is getting more and more popular among my friends to actually use Chinese characters as signature because they are harder to imitate), as long as you use the same piece of 'drawing' across all your documents. An autograph, on the other hand, is usually be legible (so that your fans can brag about it), and easy to write (so that you won't end up with a sore wrist).
It is a good practice to separate your autograph from your signature, because signature is a legal entity. Imagine a fan come to you asking for an autograph and you are in a hurry for an appointment, you can feel free to scribble your name to him/her. If in case the piece of paper your 'fan' gave you turned out to be a contract or agreement, it will not be legally valid.
