what is the difference between upgrade and custom intallation

Upgrade means if you have windows XP and you're changing it to windows 7 then it's upgrading.

A custom installationdoesn't preserve your programs, files, or settings. we can also call it as clean installion in which you have to wipe your all data and reinstall the windows.
