Hi is a shorter version of hello and yet is deemed less formal than hello. Hello is usually also used for a more dramatic effect in movies especially in quotations such as "hello brother" as it has more drama in it than "hi brother".

Hi is also often used in text messages and has other ways in which it can be said. It is quite a modern world, while hello can be traced back in books from the past and much longer ago.

Neither of them is wrong to say, it merely depends on your situation. If you are meeting a friend, people usually say "hi". If you are meeting a manager or some other important figure, my suggestion is to use "hello" and even place a "sir" or "m'am" if it aids the desired effect.
