What is the function of cover slip while mounting a slide?

It doesn't allow the air bubbles to come between the view and gives a clear view of the specimen.

There are two function while mounting a slide:-

*It protects the microscope's objective lens from contacting the specimen.

*It creates an even thickness for viewing.
