Nitrogen at about 78% of the air provides at least an inert gas with respect to breathing with which to mix with oxygen.
Some forms of nitrogen fixing bacteria are able to bind the nitrogen gas into nitrates and nitrites. These molecules can be further processed into amino acids necessary for proteins and DNA.
While the nitrogen is in the atmosphere it is not important. Only it's sub products when converted for a specific biological purpose, becomes useful. When nitrogen is removed from the atmosphere it becomes vital for living organisms. As a whole nitrogen when present in the atmosphere had no specific use.
