 - 5 \sin( \alpha )  + 12 \cos( \alpha )

a \sin( \alpha )  + b \cos( \alpha ) \:  is \:  \sqrt{ {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2} }  \\  \\ so \:the \: greatest \: value \: of \:  - 5 \sin( \alpha )  + 12 \cos( \alpha ) will \: be \\  \\  \sqrt{ { - 5}^{2}  +  {12}^{2} }  \\  \\  \sqrt{25 + 144}  \\  \\  =  \sqrt{169}  \\  \\  = 13
