It was the first portable computer with the clam shell design used in today's laptops. The success of the PC Convertible was the catalyst for competitors like Compaq and Toshiba to switch to the clam shell design in their portable computers. And so began the era of the laptop computer.

The history of laptops describes the efforts in the 1970 s and 1980 s to build small, portablepersonal computers that combine the components, inputs, outputs and capabilities of a desktop computer in a small chassis. Before laptop/notebook computers were technically feasible, similar ideas had been proposed, most notably Alan Kay's Dynabookconcept, developed at Xerox PARC in the early 1970 s. One of the first reasonably portable computers was the Xerox NoteTaker, again developed at Xerox PARC, in 1976. However, only 10 prototypes were built..............
