it moistens the food and helps creating food bolus.it contains enzyme amylase that breaks down starches down into maltose and dextrin....n so its helpful in digestion of food

saliva is very importance in food digestion
saliva produced an enzyme in mouths which control food partical to settled in under teeth which prevent tooth decay.
